Why a Move-In Checklist Matters

A move-in condition checklist is one of the most important documents you can create as a renter. It establishes a baseline record of the property's condition when you move in, which protects you from being charged for pre-existing damage when you move out.

Without a documented record, your landlord can claim that any damage they find was caused by you — even if it was already there when you moved in. Many states require landlords to provide a move-in inspection checklist, but it's always smart to create your own regardless.

Have both you and your landlord sign the completed checklist, and keep your copy in a safe place throughout your tenancy.
